Vacation!!!!!!

Kathy and I are leaving in a couple of hours on VACATION!!!

This is our first TRUE family vacation.  Kathy and I went on a four day cruise back in January, but with Alex and Ben we have only done family visits.  This time we are going ALL the way.

We are doing the Walt Disney World thing.  It will be expensive.  BUT it will be worth it.

First, I need to thank my parents for making this possible.  They are letting us use their motorhome for the trip.  They also have been watching the boys again this summer....which saved us A LOT of money so we could do this trip.

Also let me thank Hallerin and Nedra Hill.  Hallerin and Nedra lent us a digital camera (that is higher resolution than ours) and a Mini-DV video camera.  And I can edit the video on my laptop as well.  So, that will be a nice tool to keep this vacation with us forever.

So, we will be away.  I will not be checking e-mail.  I will not be posting to this blog.  I will try to relax and have fun with Kathy, Alex and Ben.

That is EXACTLY what this trip is all about.

Hope everyone has a great week!!

This past Sunday Morning show....

After having over 48 hours to reflect on the show on Sunday Morning, here is what I think.

I was right.  I was completely right.  I went back and listened again.  I was and I am right.

Now, if you haven't listened to the show you can get it back at the website.  It is commercial free and it is only 39 minutes long.

The show was about Hezbollah's invasion of Israel and the kiddnapping of two Israeli soldiers and the response that continues.  Actually, I opened the show by saying that the world has gone insane.  I read the statement from The Holy See (Vatican) that had been mischaracerized in most of the rest of the media.  I commented how countries like Norway were telling Israel, as were others, to show restraint.

It was an interesting show.  At one point, the show degraded as a caller, who indicated to my producer that he was possibly Anti-Semetic.  This caller, who identified him as John Paul, quizzed me on my lack of friendships with Jews.  After indicating that it did not matter to me, a persons religion or ethnicity is not a factor to me.  He implied that I was a bigot.

I called him a bigot.  I called him an Anti-Semite.  He did not argue this.  John Paul only decried my name calling.

Was it name calling?  By definition, yes it was.  Was it the truth?  You listen and you decide. Tell me.

In any case, I often rethink my position on issues.  Everyone needs to do that.  Mainly for clarity, but also to show an open mind.

Looking back on Sunday.  I think I was clear.  I think I was on target.  And I still think I was right.

No, let me restate that.  I was and I still am right.

Now, if you listened to the show and you disagree, I want to hear back from you.  If you agree partially, let me know where we differ.  If you agree completely, I hope you enjoyed the show.  I also hope that you disagree with me on other issues from time to time. Wink

Reunification could come very soon.....

Watching the activity in the far east over the past few weeks has led me to one major conclusion.  I think that we may see the reunification of the Korean Peninsula.  Soon.

Kim Jong Il is sort of an interesting character.  He hates America and the West, but he consumes our products.  Ferrari sports cars, American television, an internet junkie (Kim, if you are reading this, please post your comments.  Thanks!) and is reported to have spent $250K on cognac in 2005.  Of course, this puts the image in my mind of Kim Jong Il as Tim Meadows' character, "The Ladies Man" from Saturday Night Live and the movie.  Picture this, Condoleeza Rice calls him up and Kim says, "Oooh, it's a lady!"  The way I see it, this is NOT too far off.

I find it especially interesting to hear former Secretary of State Madeline Albright make outrageous statements about how things were better during the eight years of the Clinton Administration.  In fact, Albright said that North Korea was not enriching Uranium during the Clinton years.  She said that they did during the former President Bush's administration and they are not.  But not when she was there.

Madame Albright, I quote my dad when I say this.  Everyone who believes that, stand on your head.  Madame Albright, you are a either a fool or you have your head in the sand.

Madame Albright, I will go a step further.  And you make take this as praise.  I think your policy toward North Korea was second only to Neville Chamberlain's policy toward Nazi Germany in effectiveness.

Now, I am not going to praise the Bush Administration for their handing of this situation either.  I think they have screwed it up as well.  And the apparent inaction has me scratching my head.  The Axis of Evil statement of 2003 did include North Korea.  And they have gotten their attention from us finally.  I think going to Iraq first made sense because they did have WMD's (as has been finally made widely public through comments in the Senate and House) and because Iraq had a strategic location.  Now that we have our troops on either side of Iran, in Afghanistan and in Iraq, they were next on the list.  North Korea comes last because of the same reason that existed in 1953. China!!

China will not take our side because it does not benefit them.  They will not go directly against us either.  Why?  Because it does not benefit them.  I do not trust the Chinese government.  Their culture teaches them that they need to be non-committal until they find a clear benefit from taking sides.  Their government also facilitates slave labor.  OK, slave may be a strong term.  But they have these "labor camps" where they generously provide food, shelter and recreation facilities.  Why would the workers ever need to leave?  So they don't let them.  Technically, they might not be slaves, but we all know the difference.  And it keeps the prices at Wal-Mart low.

What will happen in North Korea?  It all rests on what the West and Japan is willing to risk when it comes to China.  If we tell China to shut up and we will handle it, then we have to see their reaction.

Here is my guess.  China does not like the status quo with North Korea either.  But, it does not benefit China to act.  Japan and the USA can make their move against North Korea, China expresses outrage.  The US, Japan and South Korea can rebuild the North as part of a unified Korea.  China then can make more money and build their power by selling goods to their new neighbor.  And then they can plan their invasion for 20 years down the road.

Because the fact of the matter is, China wants to be the next empire of the world.  As long as we maintain our position as a superpower here in the USA, this will not happen.  However, too many here in the USA want to end that role.

And THAT is the biggest problem.

Post your thoughts.

Ben - Enjoying the Movies...who cares what was showing

I have written in here about Ben before.  What I have not told you are some of the things that make him....quirky.  Here is one example, but I loved every minute of it.

Tonight, Kathy and I decided to take Alex and Ben to see the movie "Cars" because we have tomorrow (Independence Day) off from work AND they were really good while Kathy was out of town on her bike ride.

As you know, taking a family of four to the movies is not cheap.  Normally, we do the matinée thing to save a few bucks.  But, I wanted to do something special.  So I picked up the tickets this afternoon because I did not know if the showing would be sold out.  In this case, it was on the only digital projection showing in the Knoxville area.

So we sit in the movie and I am between Kathy and Ben, with Alex on the other side of Kathy.  About thirty minutes in to the movie, Ben grabs my arm and pulls it around him.  Then he would lean up and "whisper" in my ear (his whispering can be heard in Nashville).  He was telling me what was happening in the movie.  Then he would quiet down again, all the while holding my arm around him.

Now keep in mind, Ben is eight years old.  He turns nine on August 13th.  Also keep in mind that he has my build.  He is 4'10" and weighs about 110 pounds.  Halfway through the movie, Ben decides that he wants to sit on my lap.  He told me that he was tired and that I needed to keep him awake.

So for most of the next hour, Ben is sitting on my lap.  Giving me hugs and telling me how much he is enjoying the movie.  Kathy looks over at me and smiles.  Then she had sort of a puzzled look.  I must of looked like I was tired of having 110 pounds on my lap.  And maybe I was.  But I told her right then that I have to enjoy this.  This will probably be the last time that Ben will want to sit on his daddy's lap in a movie.

For the exciting finish, I had him get back in his own seat.  By this time he was bouncing too much.  That bouncing turns 110 pounds in to something much more.  Ben kept on hugging my arm and pulling it around him.  And he kept telling me what the movie was about.  And what was happening.

Some parents may find this behavior upsetting or even annoying.  It IS different than a lot of other kids.  It is very different than Alex.  But that is Ben.  And I loved every second of it.  I really did.

And I will miss it when he is too big to sit on my lap.  And I will miss my little boy as he gets bigger and bigger.  Alex is already almost as tall as Kathy.  Ben is not far behind.  In a way, I wonder if it is that it makes me feel older seeing the two of them get to be so big.  I wonder if I missed too much along the way.  I always wonder if I am doing enough.

But no matter how much I have been complaining about it, the experiences like tonight at the movies tell me that spending the money on our first real vacation is worth it.  It is a lot of money.  But it will be a lot of memories.  And you can't put a price tag on that.  And you can't take those memories away.

And even when Alex and Ben tower over me in a few years, they will always be my little boys.  And I will love them even more than I do now.  And I don't know how that can be possible, but it will be.
