September 11, 2001....where were you? What did you do?

I was a 31 year old undergraduate at the University of Tennessee. I was in my car listening to the radio when I heard that a plane hit the World Trade Center. My first thought was that it was a plane in the fog like the B-25 that hit the Empire State Building back in 1945. When I heard the description on the radio, I ran to find a TV on campus.

Within a minute to getting to a TV, I saw the second plan hit the other tower. After a few minutes, I had to leave for class. Of course, I had to turn my cell phone off in class. When that class let out, I checked my messages. SEVEN!! I learned from the messages that the a tower had collapsed, the Pentagon had been attacked, the other tower attacked and another plane was missing.

Then I got to my next class. Why did we bother? Class was let out early. I went to the student radio station that I worked at as Sports Director, WUTK (www.wutkradio.com). I called a local TV station and requested permission to air their audio. They granted it. After ten minutes of airing their audio, other cut off the broadcast. Why? Because they were afraid of getting in trouble! Dumbasses!!!

I had to pick up my son Alex from Kindergarten. Alex and I talked about what happened. Imagine explaining that to a Five Year Old. Not easy.

I called my parents that night. I asked them for their insight. What could they compare this to in their lives? The answer? Nothing. My dad said, maybe Pearl Harbor, but that was before they were born.

WOW! I was mad. I was upset. I was simply mad. I wanted to do something myself. What could I do?

What about you?
