21 February 2008 - The Old Grey Lady strikes again

The New York Times has a story out this morning attacking Senator John McCain.

They have no evidence.  The Times has rumors.  The Times has innuendo.  The Times has no evidence.  The Times has not talked to the lobbyist.

The Weekly World News is no longer available at the newsstand.

Coincidence?  I think NOT!!

Watch out for another Wii shortage coming this spring.  Nintendo has announced that on May 19th the new Wii Fit game will be out.  I have already mentioned the fitness benefits that are, perceived or real, with the Nintendo Wii.  Now, Nintendo is really going to focus on this with this new product.

Yes, we will get our hands on this as soon as we can.  Or is that Wii can.

Short and sweet.  Vacation begins within the next hour.  Have a great rest of the month, look for sporatic updates over the next week.

20 February 2008 - Once Upon A Time

Once upon a time, there was a candidate seeking the highest office in the land.  This candidate started working at the community level and built support from there.  The candidate was known for being a skillful orator.  As this candidate was seeking the largest office of the land, the candidate was able to fill stadiums and arenas full of supporters.

The candidate talked of things that hit home with the people.  The candidate was quite the populist.  It seemed that most everyone liked what they were hearing from the candidate.

Who is the candidate?  Post your answer in comments.

-----------------------

Michelle Obama got in a little hot water with her comments on Monday.  Had it happened once, this could have been accepted as a slip of the tongue.  It happened in both Milwaukee and Madison...slight changes in the actually wording.  But what she said was widely reported on Tuesday.

In a conversation about this statement at my house last night, my mom offered that there are two Americas.  Things are different for African-Americans.  While I agree with that view, I disagree with that general statement.

How we view our great nation is like how we view a joke.  It is all perspective.  In other words, there are over 300 million Americas.

Now, many are ripping Michelle Obama for her comments.  I will not be among them.  Rather, I feel sorry for Michelle Obama for having such a negative perspective.

I cannot assume to know what led her to this view.  I can say that from my view, I was very proud to be an American when we WON the Cold War without having to come to blows.  And even though it was in Germany and a German even, I was proud to be an American when the Berlin Wall came down...because I knew how involved we were in that happening.  I was proud of my nation when we helped liberate Kuwait back in 1991.  I was proud of the unity that I saw in America following the attacks of September 11, 2001.

Michelle Obama hasn't felt what I have felt.  So, don't be angry with her.  Feel sorry for her.

I sincerely do.  And I hope you can feel the same way.

Sports time.  Who will be the coach of the Indiana Hoosiers this time next year?  Hell, next week.

There is an old saying, if you sleep with the dogs don't be surpised when you wake up with fleas.  Kelvin Sampson broke rules concerning phone calls to recruits whil the head basketball coach at Oklahoma.  Now, he is accused of doing the same thing at Indiana.  He job situation seems to be day to day.

Indiana University, I hear that Bob Knight is retired.  Maybe.....naahhh.

-------------------

And finally, I said this on the air yesterday and I am waiting to hear this come up from some political spin doctor.  Fidel Castro calls it quits, right.  How long until someone credits President Bush with this?

He deserves credit for a many things, the capitulation of Libya as one example, but this is NOT something that ANY AMERICAN deserves credit for.

19 February 2008 - Fidel, in like a lion, out like a lamb?

He seized power when Eisenhower was President.  He irritated Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Bush....now he says, "No mas!"

Of course, I am referring to Fidel Castro.  But don't go out looking for cheaper sugar or legal Cuban cigars anytime soon.  Little brother Raul will hold power for now.  And elections will follow.

Keep in mind, this will be a COMMUNIST election.  So, expect a choice of ONE!

-----------------------

So, will the Cheeseheads break the streak for Barack Obama?

Unless you count New Mexico, and why should we since they can't......(took how long to decide?), Obama has a streak of eight streak.  In fact, he is playing so strong that I think he cracked the top ten in the latest Associated Press men's basketball poll.  But what will Wisconsin do?  WWWD?  Sorry...but that is a mystery that even Scooby Doo and the gang will have to wait to get the answer.

Reasons why political pundits believe Wisconsin may go for Hillary Clinton....and I am NOT making this up...the population is mainly white and less educated.

Insert your own jokes here.  I lived in Wisconsin for 13 years (but only 11 consecutive years)....I will keep mine to myself.

-------------------------

Speaking of jokes, The History Channel has a show that started running last night called "The History of the Joke" hosted by Lewis Black.

Before finally falling to sleep last night, I watched this show.  It is not only very informative, but it is pretty damned funny.  I do not recommend it for younger viewers.

Of course, there are few things with Lewis Black that I wouldn't watch.  In my opinion, he is one of the funniest, and oddly accurate, people that I have ever seen.  For that reason alone, I highly recommend this show.

-------------------------

And finally, have you seen the latest basketball polls? Of course, I bring this up for purely selfish reasons.  BUT....look at the schedule and see what is happening on Saturday!!!!

First, Memphis must beat Tulane, who took the Tigers to overtime in their earlier meeting, and Tennessee must beat Auburn, who is only 13-10 and are coming to Thompson-Boling Arena.  Both of those games are on Wednesday.  But it sets up a fairly rare 1 vs 2 match up less than a month before the tournament begins.

Huh, I could actually legally lay money on this game this year.  Hmmmmm.

--------------------------

Well, I am OK with this on college campuses, not so much on the K-12.  Just my opinion, but not a bad thought coming out of Arizona.  I think my posting from Friday reflects that.

--------------------------

Add your comments as you see fit.  OH, and keep in mind that you will probably NOT see an update on Friday....or most of next week.

18 February 2008 - Looking back, Looking forward

It was ten years ago this past weekend when something life changing occurred.

We were visiting my parents, who then lived in Signal Mountain, Tennessee, the weekend of Valentines Day.  While there, I worked on our taxes.  This was a tough year because we had moved in 1997 and I had to do Federal and part-year Minnesota state taxes.  We also had an addition (Ben) to our family.

Well, while working on taxes I would go ask my mom for help.  I guess I need to rephrase that, I attempted to ask Mom for help.  Had a little trouble.  I started stuttering.

Prior to this point I had an occasional stutter or stammer.  But nothing that was too distracting.  This was different.  I was unable to get anything out.   That might be a slight exaggeration, but it was tough for me to get my words out.

At the time, I was working in business to business computer sales.  Most of my work was over the phone at that time, and I couldn't talk in person nor over the phone.

Essentially, I was paralyzed.

After about two or three days of prompting....pushing actually...I went to a doctor.  Then another and another.  And more doctors still.  And a speech therapist.  Didn't know what my problem was.  They examined my head and found nothing.  (Everyone who knows me could have told them that.)

In late April, it was determined that my problem was lack of quality sleep.  The stresses of work, having moved, the addition of a family member, etc., led to this tipping point.  Obstructive sleep apnea.

And this is the point of sharing this story with you.  Obstructive sleep apnea is a problem that affects more people than most realize.  Football great Reggie White died as a result of obstructive sleep apnea.  If you are having sleep issues, get them checked out.

It is better to sleep wearing a weird mask that forces air up your nose and into your lungs and wake up somewhat refreshed...even at 4am...than to NOT wake up at all.

I am sure that Mrs. White would agree.

------------------------

OK, the looking forward part.....vacation starts for me on Thursday at 10:00am.

------------------------

It has been widely reported in the mainstream media, and stressed by his Democrat collegues in the U.S. Senate, that John McCain has a bit of a temper.  And both groups are using that to imply that McCain should not be President due to this temper.

Well, we have had another President with a temper issue.  And both the mainstream LIBERAL media and the Democrats in the Senate liked him.  And he lost it again over the weekend.

Bill Clinton had a temper and still does.  These hypocrites loved him.  Personally, I think the man was not only a bad President AND a bad person, but more importantly he was ineffective.

So, how about a little honesty from the media?

Sorry, now I am just getting a little crazy.

There are checks and balances throughout our government.  This temper concern is silly.

Besides, we don't hear much about another candidate's temper issues.  Or how she has reportedly shown a anti-semetic streak.

------------------------

It won't make you sick, but.......

The largest beef recall in our nation's history is under way.  But don't worry, you and probably your  children have already eaten it.

WHAT???

Go to that link, read the story and explain it to me.

If I understand this correctly, they reason for the recall was for how the cattle were treated.  There were cattle called "downer cattle" that were slaughtered and processed.  These were cattle that were sick to walk.  Usually a bad sign regarding the health of any animal.

There is a CHANCE you might get sick.  But even the USDA is saying this is unlikely.

------------------------

OK, time for me to clarify a position that I have.  This is regarding my long held position on capital punishment.

I am for capital punishment.  Period?  Well, not quite.  Here is HOW I want to see it used in the future.

The burden of proof, as most people know, in criminal cases is guilt beyond reasonable doubt.  Trust me, I was just a jury foreman, I know this.  In the punishment phase of capital cases, I think you increase that standard to a higher level.  I don't want to see an innocent person executed.  On the flip side, I don't want a guilty person to ever see a second a freedom again in their life.

If there is DNA evidence, if there is video evidence, if there is another other kind of evidence beyond refute to prove guilt, then send them down the express lane.

Furthermore, I have no problem with including sex offenders.  The ONLY problem with this is that sex offenders may go ahead and murder because the penalty is the same.  BUT that is only if you think capital punishment is a deterrent.  If you say that it is NOT a deterrent, then express lane these scumbags also.

For those who don't completely understand our legal system, here is my little lesson for you.  Most of the legal challenges that are allowed in out system are NOT based on new evidence, but rather on legal procedural errors.  This is a problem.  IF new evidence is found, present it and let REAL justice prevail.  Too often, our justice system does NOT provide JUSTICE.

Oh, and stop this lethal injection crap.  Who cares about being humane to someone who wasn't humane?  Seriously, this is stupid.

Hangings, guilliotines, firing squads are all acceptable.  Gas chamber is a little too damned humane in my opinion.

And in this day and age of WWE, TNA and UFC, why the hell NOT put executions on Pay-per-View.  I wouldn't pay for it, but there are a lot of sick bastards out there who would.  But, you'd have to reformat things a little bit.  You know, schedule an undercard.  Keep the main event for some real sick serial killer type.  Oh, and you got to have a sideline reporter.  Got to have the sideline reporter.  I want to see some silicone bimbo outside talking with the families of the victims or the cry-me a damned river protestors.

Yup, let Vince McMahon produce it....as long as most of the profits go back to the states to pay for their stay in the grey bar hotel.

And McMahon would be on the hook for the costumes too.

Happy Presidents Day.  Add your comments as you see fit.

15 February 2008 - Winning money, getting money and more

First, for those who listened to "Partyline" yesterday, we got a call at the end of the first hour.  This caller thanked me for attending the Jefferson City Host Lions Club 52nd Annual Ham and Bean Dinner the day before AND for buying tickets to their raffle for lottery tickets.  And to tell me that I won the $50 worth of lottery tickets.  Better yet, she brought the ticket to me later that morning.

During our promotions meeting, I was scratching off the tickets.  The first 9 tickets were losers.  I checked the odds....just to be sure...JUST TO BE SURE...ranged from 1:4.71 to 1:4.82.  The next was a winner....for a free ticket.  Well, when it was all said and done, the $5 investment in the raffle got me $50 worth of lottery tickets....and the tickets got me $20.  So, I made $15 on it.  Not bad.

Oh, and I went CRAZY with my winnings.  I bought....hold on....ground beef, tortillas, taco seasoning and yogurt.   OOOOOHHHHH....AHHHHH

---------------------

Now, on to getting money.   As most of you know, in 2007, we were only partial year residents of Missouri.  BUT, since I worked here all year in 2007, I had state taxes withheld for the whole year.

I did our taxes last Friday, the first time doing state taxes in ten years...and THAT state was Minnesota.  Well, our small refund arrived yesterday.  LESS THAN A WEEK!!

I think I will use that for something crazy.....like ground beef, tortillas, taco seasoning and yogurt.

----------------------

Another UNIVERSITY shooting, this time at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois.  The leads me back to the point I made following the Virginia Tech shootings in April.

On a college campus, you are just asking for trouble.  Why?  Because you have a large population that is KNOWN to be unarmed.  The standard policy on college campuses is to NOT allow firearms.

I am not saying that we arm college students.  But I am saying that there is this little piece of our Bill of Rights known as the Second Amendment.  For the record, the Second Amendment reads,
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
Now, often times the more liberal elements of our population cling to the phrase "well regulated Militia" in the Second Amendment.  Well we must look at that word "Militia" and understand what that word really means.

To get the best idea of what that word meant to those who wrote our Constitution, lets look at the Militia Act of 1792.  This was amendended by the Militia Act of 1862 to include African-Americans in the ranks of the militia.  And both of these acts were replaced by the Militia Act of 1903, which created the National Guard.

The base act, the 1792 act..or acts really...conscripted every "free able-bodied white male citizen" between the ages of 18 and 45 into a local militia company overseen by the state.  While back then, the militia was VERY loose, it did make all of us white boys part of them.  And it had provisions for us to own weapons.

Right now, I am in violation of that.  Where can I get a deal on Glock 21?

Anyhow, don't prohibit students from carrying firearms.  Just make them subject to the same laws as the rest of us.  It would remove the giant target off of their back.

---------------------

Yesterday there was a call during "Partyline" where we discussed the use of one's First Amendment rights to free speech.  The conversation started with the caller saying that she wished more people would excercise their right to free speech.

Quickly, I brought up that free speech is NOT absolute.  Their are consquences for one's words and actions.  Rick brought up that burning a flag may be free speech, but don't be surprised when someone pops you in your nose for doing so.  While that is assault, and I do not condone that, it is a possible reaction.

The response was, "we shouldn't have to live in fear like that."  Huh?

So, I went on and said that our founding fathers, the signers of the "Declaration of Independence" knew that there would be consequences of their actions.  And there were some definite consequences.   All we got in response again was "we shouldn't have to live in fear like that."  What?

Even in physics we learn that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.  Same goes for speech.  Every time I speak, or write, that I may get a reaction.  Might be agreeing with me, might be disagreeing with me, might be changing stations, or maybe, like Kathy, the rolling of ones eyes at me.

It is not "living in fear"....it is a reality.  If someone doesn't like that, excerise the right to shut up.  Safer, though less effective.

14 February 2008 - Happy Valentines Day...and more crap

Yeah, whatever.  I can credit my good friend Lori Snyder for setting the tone of this day shared by a lot of us.  This morning I got a e-card from Lori that was an anti-Valentine.  I had to keep from laughing too loudly and waking up the entire house.  THANK YOU!!  And expect a phone call tomorrow....you know why.

----------------------

Well, one of the things noted in the e-card that Lori sent was the origins of Valentines Day.  Something about Valentine being killed.  Funny how we celebrate things, isn't it.  I guess we celebrate Good Friday.

---------------------

Just in my hands this morning is the annual swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated. The thing is 228 pages long, weights more than all of the swimsuits featured in it, and has Will Ferrell in it.

SI now offers folks the chance to call them and opt-out of this issue.  I am sure that person is real busy.  As for me, I need to get the issue...only for show prep reasons.

I may add more later....stay tuned. Oh and Happy V.D.

13 Februrary 2008 - Housekeeping...and other thoughts

First things first, a little housekeeping.  Things that I have been meaning to write about but haven't gotten too.

I want to tell everyone about a very enjoyable book that I am reading.  "Hep Remembered" is about the late football coach of the Indiana Hoosiers.  Terry Hoeppner died in June of brain cancer and served as the inspiration of the Hoosiers team this season.  At first thought, many will think "Indiana....football....huh??" but there is so much more to Coach Hoeppner.  While Indiana is not thought of as being a traditional football power, Coach Hoeppner reignited the players, the staff and even some of the fans who had been suffering with a program that hasn't made a major bowl game appearance since the 1967 Rose Bowl.  Sadly, Hep passed before his impact at Indiana could be fully appreciated.

If Indiana becomes a more respectable program in the next few years, they did make a bowl appearance this past season, you can give credit to Hep for getting things rolling in Bloomington.  I have not finished the book yet, but it has some great anecdotes throughout.  I plan on finishing in on the planes as we head out west for vacation.

Big Thank You to Roger Thompson for this great gift.  Roger, while not an Indiana fan, I will be pulling for them to keep winning under Coach Lynch and build that legacy that Hep deserves.

--------------------

Dave Foulk asked that I write about this, so here goes.  He called it one of the oddest moments in radio.

As many of you know, I was the traffic reporter on WNOX in Knoxville for about 4 and a half years.  What you may not know is that I held that same position on WNOX's sister stations.  Along the way, one of those stations was hip-hop/rap Wild 98.7 (WYIL).

After starting out as simply "J.K." for a few months, I was approached to make a change.

What kind of change is the traffic guy supposed to make?

Soon, I found out.  The new program director and the operations manager approached me.  They had heard me do different voices around the studios.  Hell, everyone in radio does this.  I may have gone a step further since I actually took a class taught by Don Messick back in 1993.

"Jay, we need to take this to the next level."

What in the Hell does that mean?  I was the damned traffic guy.  Next level?  What, they want me to build a fancy interchange?  What in the Hell does THAT mean?

Well, after demonstrating some of the voices that I do well, they wanted something different.  So, went with one that I could do rather easily.....a very bad version of Homer Simpson.  And we named him "Highway Homie" to go along with all of the other homeys there in K-Town.

So for about eight months, I not only did the WNOX traffic gig as ME, I did the WOKI (AAA) traffic gig as me....and then I switched gears and became "Highway Homie" on Wild 98.7 twice an hour.

Well, I figured if I had to do something this damned ridiculous with my voice, I may as well give Homie a personality to match.  Yeah, I gave him Homer Simpson's personality as well.  Punctuated a lot of things with "D'oh!" and "mmmmmm" through the reports.

One time there was an overturned tractor-trailer on Middlebrook Pike at 44th Street.  Homie's report was something like this.  "Got an overturned truck on Middlebrook at 44th....GOOD NEWS, not a Beer Truck.  Mmmmm...beer....  Lots of police officers here to get this cleaned up.  Maybe I should share my doughnuts."

Now here is the bad part.  Kathy would have people ask her at work what happened to "J.K." on Wild and who was "Highway Homie" and why he replaced me.  She was quite embarassed to admit that I was "Highway Homie"....probably embarassed to admit that SHE was married to Homie.

Well, this went on for eight months.  It ended when the station was flipped to a new format.

-----------------

Congratulations to my nephew Jamie Henne who is a new daddy!!  Brayden Henne joined us yesterday morning at 7 pounds 8 ounces and 20.5 inches tall/long.  Mom and Brayden are doing great.  I am sure that Dad is in panic mode.  New Dad... it happens.

-----------------

Stick a fork in her, she's done!!

Well, maybe not.  But the momentum is against Hillary Clinton.  Things are moving quite well for Barack Obama, having won 8 of the last 8 primaries/caucuses.

But there is this little issue of the Super Delegates.  Aren't they just Super?  Well, depends on who is your candidate in the Democrat race.

First a little history, the first use of the Superdelegates came in the 1984 election.  Superdelegates are uncommitted delegates that come from the ranks of Democrat elected officials.  In 1984, it was the Superdelegates who handed the nomination to Walter Mondale over Gary Hart. Some have done some historical revisionism to state that this was done to hurt Jesse Jackson.  Not true as he was not one of the two leaders.  BUT it has been brought up to stir race in to the mix again this year.  Unfair to Senator Obama.

The Superdelegate was created to help steer the nomination in line with how the votes were cast during primary/caucus process.  Since lobbying for these votes is part of the process now, it sort of removes this movement toward reflecting the will of the voters.

Oh well, we will see.  It is THEIR process.  Not mine.  Same goes for the GOP.  Their process.  Not mine.

Thank GOD!!

12 February 2008 - Lincoln's birthday

Lincoln would be 199 if he was alive today.

And no matter what you might think, even if Booth hadn't visited him in the balcony, he'd still be dead.

Speaking of Lincoln, many refer to Abraham Lincoln as being our greatest President.  But chew on this for a moment.  Look at the number of actions that Lincoln took which were outside the Constitution.  Suspension of habeus corpus, imprisonment of journalists, imprisonment of others, use of an income tax.  Hmm...

Does ANY OF THIS sound familiar?

I doubt that we will look back on another President with such favor.

So, why Lincoln?  Because he held the Union together.  He did not speak in terms of fear.  He acted on it, but didn't speak on it.

History is interesting, isn't it?

----------------

There is an Indiana voter identification law at the Supreme Court.  The issue, some say..as in the American Civil Liberties Union...that requiring ID is an illegal poll tax.  You have GOT to be kidding me.

Georgia has gone round and round on this same issue.

Now, Missouri is going to enter the debate.

OK, here is the ONLY part of the argument that I can possibly agree with.  IF the cost of getting a State ID or Drivers License is so great that one cannot afford it, then it is a de facto poll tax.  Here is how you get around that.  Offer free ID's to those who cannot afford them.  Problem solved.

That is what Georgia thought.  That was struck down.  Getting a ride to the place to get the free ID was the issue.

OK, give folks a ride to the place.

11 February 2008 - Idiots Travel in Packs and other weekend observations

This weekend, I made an observation.  Idiots travel in packs.  This doesn't mean in organized groups necessarily.  Here is what I noticed.

I went to the grocery store on Saturday (HyVee) to pickup a few items for the rest of the weekend.  As I was trying to park, I passed not one, not two, but three different vehicles going the wrong way down the aisle of the parking lot.  And these were NOT all going together, these were all separate vehicles about 30 ot 40 meters apart.  I had to stop for one to get out of the aisle.  I had to squeeze to get over for the second.  And I pulled into my spot to avoid the third.  Now, to their defense, the direction of the parking lot is only noticeable by the angle of the vehicles parked AND by the 4 foot wide arrow painted in reflective yellow paint.

Now, it is possible that these folks were all connected.  The spacing/timing of them made me doubt it.  But, I could be wrong.

Next time you are out, take a look around.  See if you notice for yourself that idiots travel in packs.

Oh, and if you don't notice this.....you might want to be concerned.  As for me, I will be going to Las Vegas in ten days and Los Angeles in two weeks.  I figure I will be able to site plenty more examples when I get back.

--------------------

Did you watch the Pro Bowl yesterday?  See all those crazy commercials?

Yeah, me neither.  I checked, the NFC won.

You excited about the NBA All Star Weekend?

Yeah, me neither.

At least we have NCAA hoops to look forward to.  And for those who like making a lot of left turns, NASCAR gets underway this weekend.

-------------------

Ok, Ok...my political comments.

Obama sweeps.  Don't you just want to shed a tear for Hillary.  Oh, wait, she will work on that herself.

By the way, she canned her campaign manager.  Well, the reports are that she resigned.  Yeah, and the reports were that Warren Harding died of natural causes.

And on the other side, Huckabee won in Kansas and Louisiana.  Make your own Kansas jokes if you choose.  But as far as Louisiana goes, remember that this is the state that has New Orleans, where the re-elected Ray Nagin.

Nothing against Governor Huckabee, but why does he go on.  Continuing to do so may have him ending up being the butt of jokes reserved for Ron Paul.  And trust me on this, Ron Paul deserves to be the butt of as many jokes as possible.

Speaking of the Ron Paul campaign, he is cutting back.  Tears were shed in the basements of many mother's homes.  Don't worry, those tears were wiped up with cloth from Mr. Spock and Klingon uniforms.

8 February 2008 - Friday perspective

Has it really been a Super Week???

Yesterday afternoon, I was watching the launch of space shuttle Atlantis with all of the enthusiasm of when I was a little boy.  (Assuming that I actually WAS little at one point.)  I flipped back and forth between the NASA channel and Fox News Channel, before I settled on 360 (Fox).  Why?  Well, they had this really cool ticker on the bottom.  It showed, left to right, the elapsed time, the speed in feet per second and the distance down range in feet.  In addition to the video provided at the launch site, including the various telescopic views is incredible, that camera mounted on the external fuel tank is amazing.  I LOVE THIS STUFF.  So for me, this was REALLY SUPER!!

Here is the problem.  Since the time of Richard Nixon, and exacerbated under Jimmy Carter, NASA has not been funded well enough to achieve more. The shuttle program specifically has been a joke.  The concept was to cut the costs of space exploration and discovery.  Never happened.  And like a typical government program, they just threw more money at it rather than replace it.

So now, the new program will make its first manned moves about 45 years after we landed a man on the moon. Too late.

Here is what I had suggested years ago.  Offer up contracts for a return to the moon and to go to Mars to the top aerospace companies in this nation.  As part of the contracts, include provisions for royalties to be paid back to NASA for products that become commercially profitable as a result of the contracts given by NASA.  Teflon is the first of many examples that comes to mind.  In a sense, it privatizes NASA....more private money anyway.  The companies don't agree, go to someone else.

Just a thought.  And I think that recycling of capital would get me my flying car before I am 60.  OK guys, 22 and a half years to get this done.

---------------------------

Of course, I need to comment on Willard calling it quits.

Remember me talking about the rewriting of history last week?  Well, that is sort of what we are hearing from the all of the conservative pinheads.  Laura Ingraham and Sean Hannity are among the worst.  They are examples of the Johnny-come-lately's who are expressing their sorrow over Mitt Romney leaving the race.

They jumped on his bandwagon about five seconds before hit suspended his campaign.  Their verbal tears have all the sincerity of Bill Clinton.

The one who really pisses me off is Dr. James Dobson.  Dr. Dobson, with all due respect.....and I mean with all due respect...you are allegedly a minister.  HOW ABOUT BEING A MINISTER AND SHUT THE **** UP????!!!!???  Dr. Dobson, YOU are what is wrong with the Republican party today.

Dr. Dobson, how about a little "Focus on the SHUT THE HELL UP"!!!!

OK, so I am coming across as a little angry.  I am NOT really angry.  I just think that fools like Dobson, Pat Robertson, the late Jerry Falwell and others abuse the power given to them by their flock.  Billy Graham has had my respect by showing his respect for the office and staying out of the electoral process for the most part.  I have NO respect for the others.

Don't get me wrong, everyone is entitled to their opinion.  Hell, that is how I make my living.  But some people are so damned full of crap that you just don't want to hear them anymore.  On the left, Susan Sarandon, Jeff Spicoli and others from the Hollywood crowd are included.  On the right, these alleged "men of God" are included.

The real problem is that these are a bunch of hypocrites.  NOT just Dobson, but Hannity, Ingraham, Limbaugh, Coulter and others.  Does ANYONE really believe that these folks are going to vote for Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama?  Really, John McCain is scarier than Hillary?

Say what you will about John McCain, positive and negative, but to these folks he is clearly the option that better fits their alleged beliefs.

But maybe they have been a bunch of damned liars all along.

Can you see why I have no respect for them?

7 February 2008 - Where are we heading?? Really?

Um, this is scary and stupid.

Idiot.  Good news, they are not all in sports.......nor politics.  But now I know that Scottsdale, Arizona, is the Mos Eisley Spaceport of our planet.

OK, now this guy is not only an idiot, but thanks to the judge he is REALLY embarrassed now.

Love that judge.....the punishment is more than the fine.  It is the world laughing at his shortcomings.

-------------------------

Here is a landgrab that I think needs to be brought to the attention of others.

If in 190 years you have not corrected an error, that would be YOUR problem Georgia. Give it up.

------------------------

No one wanted to be on the flight with another smelly Frenchman anyway.

-------------------------

I guess the point in linking to these stories for your enjoyment is to simply point out the oddities of the human condition.

Yup, the nuts are everywhere.

Sadly, at times I think that I might be lumped in.  You may have heard that maybe it is the insane who have it right and the rest of us got it wrong.  Could be some truth in that.

But here is the point I am trying, and probably failing, to make is that when you look at how odd something or someone is, you got to keep yourself in focus.  Someone else could be putting you in the nut category.

Oh, and Britney Spears is out again.  No connection.

-----------------------

Speaking of nuts, my favorites in election years are the candidates and their spin doctors.  For example, who were the winners on Super Tuesday?

John McCain on the GOP side, right?  Really?  I heard over the weekend that he would lock up the GOP nomination on Tuesday.  Well, that didn't happen...OFFICIALLY at least.  But Mike Huckabee made a great showing when he had been written off.  He is still trailing Mitt Romney.  And Romney is claiming victory in a fashion similar to that of Baghdad Bob.

Barack Obama on the Dem side, right?  Or was it Hillary Clinton?   Well, the delegate count is 1024 to 933 in favor of Senator Clinton.  But the momentum was on the side of Obama, is it still?

Spin, spin, spin.

And I am questioning WHO is nuts?

My head hurts and I still have a show to do.

And this just in.  This spin doctoring.....that is why Britney is out.  She is reported to have said, "I watched that stuff and you think I am nuts?"

6 February 2008 - Be honest, was it really Super?

Now it is time to review the events of yesterday.  It was, of course, Super Tuesday.

One thing was decided.  It is now known that Tennessee can come from being down 16-3 and win by 22 over Florida, final score 104-82.

Beyond that, things are really no more clear than they were on Monday.  Except that again, Tennessee beat Florida handily at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Sure Mike Huckabee showed that his campaign has life and should be respected.  Sounds like his stump speeches about respect for life.  Anyhow...

Mitt Romney sounded a bit like a candidate from 2004 when he promised to take the campaign all the way to the convention then the White House.  It was not punctuated with a scream though.  Dammit.

Hillary is still ...uh... well, let me edit here, leading. But not by much.  Ha ha ha.....  Yes, I am loving to see her squirm.  Hopefully, this keeps her from laughing.

Barack Obama won Missouri and did well in a lot of places that he was not expected to.  GOOD!!

But really, the only thing super about Tuesday was that comeback by the Big Orange in Knoxville last night.

---------------------

Last week I wrote that it seems that no one running for President has a CLUE about how to PROPERLY handle the illegal immigration/border security issue.  Well, I was reading on Monday and again yesterday that it appears that Senator John McCain is starting to come around.  While a sponsor of a worker visa program that failed, he now seems to admit that we need to separate the issues.

Senator McCain, welcome aboard.  Now jump ALL THE WAY IN...the water is just fine.

For those who missed it, look at my entry from Friday.  While NOT a complete plan, the outline is fairly clear.

Now, if only I could get the candidates to pay attention to that, we could have some real change.

---------------------

I still have no solution to the problem of money corrupting the politcal process.  I think more open and absolute disclosure is a big start toward fixing it.

Part one, disclose EVERY donation, even a PENNY, from every individual to every candidates.

Part two, no organizations can donate, ONLY individuals.  PAC's and 501c3's are HORRIBLE.

Part three, donations over $10,000 must be followed by monthly print, radio and television ads disclosing who gave that amount of money.  And put NO cap on the money that can be donated.  If someone like George Soros, one of the most evil people on the planet, wants to give billions of dollars to candidates, fine.  But the exposure for the candidate would be harsh.  Really, you want to be associated with a Jew who helped Nazi's collect their fortunes, who also tried to cheat the UK welfare system, and make his fortunes via currency speculation - hurting millions of people world wide for his gain, then fine.  I hope you can sleep well at night when you associate with scum like him.

But those are just might thoughts.....maybe I am just too idealistic.  Tongue out

Comment or e-mail as you see fit.  And please read that link....you can ONLY fully get my point by reading about that...um...man.

Oh, and did you see the real super news from Tuesday.  You know, where Tennessee beat defending National Champions Florida by 22.....after trailing by 13 early.  That was Super.

5 February 2008 - Super Tuesday...what is so damned Super about it?

Super Tuesday.....I am surprised that the NFL has not sued someone over this...coming just two days after the Super Bowl, or Super Bowl Sunday, or as some call it, Super Sunday.  Anyhow....

Super Tuesday is EXACTLY what is wrong with partisan politics in America.  Twenty four states make decisions for at least one party today.  Nothing will be decided, with finality, for the Democrats today.  The Republicans COULD wrap things up today if John McCain is the winner in enough states.  So, what is wrong with Super Tuesday.

First, by having EVERYTHING time compressed, as it has been this year, too much is decided too early. No opportunity for a comeback for good candidates.

Second, by having so many events taking place in so many different states, the candidates are not presented to enough of the electorate.  The most common presentation is via television.  And television provides a distorted, albeit not ALWAYS intentional, picture of the candidates.

Third, money is everything in politics.  Money always has been, but now money is worse than it has ever been.   The almighty dollar is not the great equalizer, it is the great distorter.  How do you fix this?  Good question, but I think stretching out the process would actually help fix this.  Why?  Because budgeting of the money across more states over a much longer period of time, would have money spent more on travel and less on advertisements.  Of course, this is a PIPE DREAM...if not a CRACK pipe dream.

The compressed cycle is the biggest problem.  I didn't want to care about this crap until right about now.  And now is my time to decide.  I think I have decided how I will vote today.  I have done a lot of reading on several of the candidates.

Let me add, I am NOT excited about voting for anyone.  And that is why things, this Tuesday at least, are not that Super in my opinion.

Add yours by commenting.  (And remember that what ever happens tonight can be blamed on Dean Morgan.)

----------------------

Have you noticed how similar the coverage of the elections are to the coverage of sports?  Even reporters use sports analogies as they talk about the races.

The difference?  Sports looks better in High Definition.  Politics.....whew!!  Do you REALLY want to see the candidates that clearly??

---------------------

I find that I may be agreeing with Al Franken on this one.  Rush Limbaugh is coming across like an idiot.  Ann Coulter is the same.  And there are others.

While these folks have supported the non-Conservative Presiden George W. Bush, they are against Senator John S. McCain.

Let me be clear.  George W. Bush is not conservative.  John McCain may not be conservative either.  But how can these folks be so supportive of the President and then go against Senator McCain at the same time.  Hypocrites?  I think so.

Coulter said she'd vote for Hillary Clinton.  Right.

4 February 2008 - I USED to respect Bill Belichick

Let me first admit, I did NOT even turn on the game until midway through the second quarter.  I was checking the score on my phone, but Kathy and I were watching a movie on HBO (if you must know, "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves", I know, I know "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" is better).

Well, as I have talked and written about, I am sick and tired of not only the New England Patriots, but of Boston sports overall.  As much as I am not a New York Giants fan, I have found that I was pulling for them.  For the last two weeks, admitting that made me feel as if I was attacking windmills.  Futile seemed to be an understatement.

But I also admitted over the last two weeks how much respect I had for Bill Belichick. I may have even written here that it stemmed from when I read David Halberstam's book about him.

All the respect I had for him was gone with one second left in Super Bowl XLII.  A lot of it chipped away earlier, but more on that later.

Game is over, effectively.  Not over officially.  He moves on to the field apparently to shake hands with Tom Coughlin. And in fact, he does.  BUT, the game was NOT over. When the officials clear the field, he goes to the locker room, as does his pretty boy quarterback.  No public congratulations.  No handshake when it counts.  In the NCAA, they will let the clock run out when I coach concedes defeat.  Not in the NFL.  Bill Belichick knows this.  He didn't stick it out.

Maybe I am nitpicking.  BUT, I base that on the actions on that of at least ONE of his players.

Patriots linebacker Junior Seau RAN back to the field to finish that game.  Seau was almost in the locker room.  He could have been replaced by someone else on the field for that las second.  But he ran back to finish up.  It was the RIGHT thing to do.

And he has been heartbroken since the Chargers lost the the 49ers in 1995.  I will always respect him for that....saying that was hard is probably one of the biggest understatements of the year.

Clearly, he is upset.  Clearly, he hated to lose. But don't tell me he isn't used to it...he did coach the Cleveland Browns.

And I understand his post game press conference and post game interview demeanor.  I have worked in sports reporting long enough to know and understand that.

I do not understand leaving the field.  I can understand players, with injuries needing treatment, leaving the field.  But he has NO EXCUSE.  What more would it take?  It just showed no class.

When is the game over?  I thought it was when the clock hit ZERO.  Not 0:01!!

---------------------

The other thing that bothered me about Belichick was when he challenged a non-call.  I will admit that I do not understand all of the ideosyncratic bits and pieces of the NFL instant replay and challenge rules.  But, I think it should a rule that you can't challenge a NON-call.  By allowing that, challenge for a holding call on every play.  You will win that challenge, without any doubt.

But the 12th man of the Giants was a step from leaving the field.  The officials did not call it.  It  was ticky-tacky Billy Martin bull shit!  It was pointing out that there was too much pinetar on a bat AFTER the home run was hit.

Except that the call had no impact on the rest of the game.  It just wasted time.

Some said, especially the Fox Sports analysts with their man-crushes on Belichick and Brady, that is was brilliant coaching.  Maybe.  I think it was cheap, stupid and a waste of time for fans, players and officials.

Billy Martin!!

I used to respect the man.  Now, I can't.

-------------------

Super Tuesday is tomorrow.  It will not be over after the polls close.  Looks like Mitt Romney and Hillary Clinton are leading here in Missouri.  It appears that Romney and McCain will continue to battle.  Looks as if Clinton and Obama will fight down to the end.

And it appears that even Ron Paul won't leave the field with one second left.

1 Feburary 2008 - I blame Dean!!

Today is the last day for Dean Morgan here at Cumulus.  We all wish him well as he moves on to the Missouri State Senate Communications Office.  I know he will do well there and that we will still hear from him from time to time.

However, all that said, it is NOW time to activate one of the oldest office rules ever.  It is the rule that states you are allowed to blame the guy who left for EVERYTHING that goes wrong for the next six months.

So, I blame Dean.  Not sure what for yet.  But clearly, it is his fault.

-------------------

More talk on illegal immigration.  The problem with all the talk is that it is MISGUIDED.

Here is how.  All of the main players combine illegal immigration with border security.  While related, they need to be treated and attacked seperately.

FIRST, secure the borders.  Period.  I do not want the hordes of Huns coming across the border and leading to the collapse of the Empire.  NO, we are NOT an Empire, but it illustrates my point.  History can repeat itself.  Build a damned wall, a la East Berlin, if needed.  Patrol the wall.  Keep the bad guys out.

SECOND, and this is the key part where those who disagree with me on part one MAY come and join me on.....OPEN up immigration legally.  And here is how I suggest doing it.  Anyone who can document that the are healthy and not a criminal should be let in to the country on a sixty day condiditonal work visa.  That temporary work visa would be issued as an identification card with an RFID chip installed in it.  Those persons are NOT allowed any non-emergency public services during that conditional period.  Upon finding a job, a Social Security number is assigned and they report to I.N.S. their work status.  The employer confirms with the government that this person is their employee.  If this person leaves the employment without another job, they have sixty days to find another job.  If they are eligible for unemployment, they can collect.  If not, they get NOTHING.  If they don't have work after sixty days, they can apply for an extension and explain their circumstances, or get out of the USA.  Every case is different and should NOT be treated as a one size fits all.

Finally, THIRD, make ENGLISH the official language of the United States of America.  BUT, encourage multi-lingual education starting in Kindergarten and Pre-Kindergarten levels.  It is a PROVEN fact that multi-linugual students are higer achievers.

---------

Your thoughts?  And have a GREAT Weekend!!
