Today marks the seventh anniversary of the legalization of same sex marriage and the sixth anniversary of the legalization of euthanasia in The Netherlands. What does that tell you about the Dutch?

As part of my Improve America plan, lets trade them Jack Kevorkian and Rosie O'Donnell for a case of Heineken. Call it Heines for Heines. Or is that Hineys for Heines.

On this date in 1979, Iran officially becomes an Islamic Republic.

OK. Time to end the joke. Really, it has been 29 years. WE fell for it. Ha ha ha.

Apple Computer was founded on this date in 1976. No joke here.

That came later, in 1983. It was known as the Apple LISA.

The U.S. Department of Transportation began on this date in 1967.

I think that speaks volumes.

On this date in 1970, President Richard Nixon signed the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act in to law. That put the warning labels on cigarettes and banned broadcast ads for cigarettes, effective 1 January 1971.

So, um, how is it that I know, being BORN in 1970, that "Winston tastes good.....like a cigarette should"?????

Radio ads are effective. Even 37 years after they went off the air. Well, maybe not that effective. I don't smoke.

On this date in 1969, the Hawker Siddley Harrier made its debut in service for the Royal Air Force.

A fighter plane that can hover. Sounds like a joke even today, but it wasn't. Just ask Argentina.

In 1981, the Soviet Union introduced Daylight Saving Time. Unfortunately, most Soviet citizens couldn't afford a clock. And springing forward after a bottle of vodka is, well, challenging.

It is Phil Niekro's 69th birthday. The only joke here is whatever he still may carry in his back pocket. Or under his ballcap. Or in his socks. Or shoes.

No truth to the rumor that he is joining the Cardinals as their fifth starter. Relief maybe.

In 2008, the Kansas City Royals are in first place in the AL Central. The only undefeated road team in the AL Central.

No jokes. Just wanted to note this.

In 2008, the New York Yankees are scheduled, or rescheduled actually, the open their final season a Yankees Stadium.

I only wish there could be a joke here. There could be, if Selig shows up.

Oh, and finally, contrary to what you may have heard at 6:17 this morning. Soylent Corporation is not coming to Jefferson City.

And no, Soylent Corporation is NOT looking for a few good people.

And I am not recommending Soylent Green for your lunch today.
